MLJ Environmental is seeking a Staff Scientist II to join our team. Staff Scientist II is the intermediate level position on the sampling team. Under the supervision of Staff Scientist III, this role encompasses a variety of scientific professional responsibilities in both office and field settings. The incumbent will collect data related to public health, environmental issues, agricultural productivity, and natural resource management. Work responsibilities include performing environmental analysis, research, surveys, investigations, and studies of average difficulty. Additionally, writing preliminary reports, preparing routine client correspondence, and generating regulatory compliance documents are integral parts of this role. Work at this level emphasizes the application of proven techniques and methodologies.

The annual salary is $64,480-$75,000 based on experience. Full time employment benefits include health care, vision, dental and life insurance. Other benefits include paid vacation, paid holidays, paid sick leave, and 401k plans.
Field sampling duties include the preparation of sampling supplies, cleaning, and maintenance of sampling equipment, collecting water (both surface and groundwater) and sediment samples according to established SOPs, assuring delivery of samples to appropriate laboratories. Groundwater well monitoring experience is a plus as well as experience with GeoTracker data sets. Sampling can involve 12-13-hour days and may be conducted under conditions of extreme heat or during rain events. You must be able to carry field equipment (30 to 50 pounds) and wear personal protective gear as needed and work in outdoor areas during all seasons.
Data entry and review duties and skills includes Microsoft Access database knowledge (creating and running queries, uploading and exporting data, database design and implementation), data management (data entry, performing quality control checks), Microsoft Excel proficiency (filtering, formulas, command strings, and pivot tables), Microsoft Word proficiency, and data analysis (may include tabulation, graphing, and basic statistical analysis). This position will include training on data components involved in projects such as the Irrigated Lands Regulatory Program and include a focus on processing of water quality data for the Central Valley Regional Data Center. Attention to detail, ability to work independently, and proficiency working with data are key skills for this position. The position will involve understanding environmental and water quality regulations, managing data according to existing Standard Operating Procedures including receiving, filing, processing, and uploading data, maintain documentation, and track deliverables and timelines. Knowledge of SQL is a plus but not required.
We are looking for qualified candidates with exceptional critical thinking, verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge of water quality issues and regulations in California is preferred but not required. Knowledge of California agriculture and/or water chemistry analysis is preferred. The successful applicant should be self- motivated with an attention to detail, safety conscious, able to exercise good judgement and common sense, able to work in a small group for extended periods of time, must have a valid California driver’s license and a good driving record. Familiarity with collecting surface water samples, using multi-parameter meters, and measuring stream flow is a plus.

We are currently seeking a highly motivated Junior Project Manager to join our team, focusing on the Irrigated Lands Regulatory Program. As a Jr. PM, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the success of our projects by working with our Project Managers to maintain cooperative relationships with all persons contacted, including team members, stakeholders, and clients.
The Junior Project Manager will primarily focus on comprehensive data management tasks, including the creation and execution of data queries, uploading and exporting data, and database design and implementation. This role is also responsible for meticulous data entry and conducting rigorous quality control checks to ensure data accuracy and reliability. In addition to data-centric tasks, the Jr. PM will work towards obtaining a deep understanding of various environmental regulations, specifically the Irrigated Lands Regulatory Program. As the Jr. PM gains expertise and proficiency, they will be entrusted with managing their own smaller projects and may also take on the responsibility of overseeing and implementing particular components of larger, more complex projects, all while under supervision from the Project Manager.
Additional responsibilities include the development of Scopes of Work and budgets for new projects, tracking ongoing project progress, and effectively identifying and communicating any challenges or changes in project timelines. The Jr. PM is expected to be capable of managing a diverse workload consisting of multiple projects and assignments, and completing work under critical timelines to meet project objectives and deadlines.

MLJ Environmental is seeking a Project Manager. The Project Manager reports directly to the Program Manager and identifies problems, develops courses of action, and conducts critical and/or sensitive scientific investigations and studies. The Project Manager may prepare guidance, policy, planning, and/or regulatory documents on issues of importance to the client. Decision making at this level has a higher consequence of error than that of Junior Project Manager and requires attention to detail. Project Managers will be assigned lead responsibility for specific projects including acting as a mentor to lower-level staff, primarily, Junior Project Managers, and may act as consultants to other technical staff or management. This position is a supervisory role and will be required to supervise up to 3 employees.

Your ability to produce high-quality reports will be critical to the success of the project team and the achievement of project goals.
Your ability to effectively manage multiple projects on schedule and within budget will be essential for the success of our team. As a technical lead for complex projects, you will ensure timely completion while providing technical assistance to other professional personnel. Establishing and maintaining cooperative relationships with stakeholders will be a key part of your role, as well as communicating with internal and external stakeholders diplomatically and tactfully, especially concerning difficult and sensitive issues.
In this position, you will be responsible for developing budgets and proposals as well as meeting with potential clients to sell new projects. As a leader, you will mentor, motivate, and supervise project team members, evaluating their performance and administering rewards or discipline when necessary.
